The Blog Years

May Day!!!

It seems like it hasn't been that long since El Gran Paro Americano 2006! And our immigrant sisters and brothers took to the streets again this year! Our sisters and brothers in Montréal were pepper sprayed. Our International Longshore and Warehouse Union sisters and brothers did their part by shutting down the West Coast ports and marching! May Day is the only holiday I celebrate, and I've written about it quite a bit on this blog, as you can see here for example, and I think the little speech I gave last year is still relevant.

This year, I want to encourage folks also to sing the Internationale, the original French lyrics of which were written by Eugène Pottier, who was part of the Paris Commune. While many in my generation associate the song with images of state socialism, I think it's a song we anarchists and others can appreciate as part of our history. And singing is fun.

Watch this video to sing along with Billy Bragg's version!

Norma Field shared the documentary featured in the following clip with me last year. It's really great.

Here's a karaoke version in Japanese.
